Ritomo Miata, who beat Liam Lawson to the Japanese Super Formula title, will move up to Formula 2 in addition to the European Le Mans Series (ELMS) endurance races next year.
The Miata is 24 years old and has a very impressive track record: in 2016 it won the Japanese Formula 4 title, after which it was accepted into the Toyota youth program. In 2017 and 2018, Ritomo became national F3 vice-champion and in 2020 he won the Super Formula Lights championship.
At the same time, in 2019 he started competing in the GT500, the top class of the Japanese Super GT Championship, and last season he won the title not only in Super Formula, but also in this touring car series. By the way, many remember that Jenson Button and Heikki Kovalainen raced there quite successfully after ending their Formula 1 career.
Today, Toyota’s motorsport division, talking about its plans for 2024, announced, among other things, that the reigning Super Formula and Super GT champion will not only serve as reserve driver for the factory team in the WEC and compete in ELMS next season, but also debuts in Formula 2.
However, which team car Ritomo Miata will drive has not yet been announced.
