WEC: Nyck de Vries will drive for Toyota in 2024

In September we wrote that Nyck de Vries could replace Jose Maria Lopez in the Toyota Gazoo Racing (TGR) factory team in the World Endurance Championship, and now this has been officially confirmed.

Although he failed to achieve convincing results in Formula 1 driving an AlphaTauri car and was fired mid-season, it cannot be denied that he is an experienced and talented driver. It is no coincidence that Nick won titles in Formula 2 and Formula E in Formula 1. his time.

In 2024, De Vries will drive the #7 Toyota GR010 HYBRID hypercar in the same crew as Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi. In the period 2020 to 2022. Nick served as TGR’s reserve pilot and will now take his place in the main team.

Lopez will continue to compete in the WEC, but will move to the LMGT3 category and will drive the new Lexus RC F GT3 sports car of the Akkodis ASP team, which provides technical support to Toyota.

Kamui Kobayashi, head of Toyota Gazoo Racing: “I would like to thank Jose for his enormous contribution to the common cause, he will always be part of the TGR family. At the same time, I am happy that Nick is returning to our team, where he will be part of crew number 7.

We know each other from his days as a test driver and reserve driver for the team, combined with other series appearances, and know how fast and consistent he can be.

The crews of both our cars in 2024 are made up of top-level professionals, and this is important as there are only more competitors in the Hypercar category. I am confident that our team will become stronger and that we can prepare for a new challenge in the winter season.”

Nick de Vries: “I’m very happy to be back in endurance racing, especially with the TGR team. I have always loved these races and this championship is now going through a period of incredible prosperity.

I’ve been involved with the team for a number of years in other roles but never had the chance to race and it’s great that now is the time!

I would like to thank the team for their continued support and confidence in me. I’m looking forward to working together in car #7 with Mike and Kamui. They are both talented riders and have achieved a lot, and I am confident we will make a great team.”
