Daniel Ricciardo admitted that the Las Vegas Grand Prix was a painful experience for him and the AlphaTauri team, as the AT04 was much lower in speed than its rivals’ cars on the new city circuit.
The Australian started from 14th position and finished there, and after the race, analyzing the events, he explained what caused the lack of pace.
“We believed the pace would be higher, although I knew we would have difficulties at the start,” Ricciardo said on the championship’s official website. “But I still hoped that we could improve once everything stabilizes and we get into the right rhythm.”
But it didn’t work, I think also because of all those restarts, where it was more difficult for us than for others to warm up the tires. In the third corner they overtook me on the outside track, although it was very slippery there, but the competitors somehow managed to gain grip, and I could only worry. It was quite disappointing, but there was really nothing we could do.
On the one hand, we could not change the situation in any way, but at the same time it is of course necessary to find out the reasons for the problems that held us back all weekend – in one fast lap in qualifying and on long runs in the race.
The weekend was a painful experience. True, the difficulties were precisely related to the features of the surface of a particular route, but this cannot remain as it is. Although we have to prepare for Abu Dhabi now, after the race in Las Vegas we have to analyze and figure everything out. It doesn’t seem like we have any answers yet, so there’s some work to be done the next time we come together for this race.”
