George Russell: The season was very strange

George Russell summed up the season, complaining that he and the Mercedes team had not achieved the results they deserved, but that they had to do everything possible to maintain second place in the Constructors’ Championship.

George Russell: “We have a tough battle ahead of us with Ferrari, but we are happy to take on this challenge. This team arrived in Abu Dhabi after a strong performance in the previous stage, but I would obviously rather be in our position than theirs.

I think this weekend we must first of all concentrate on our work, try to reach the highest possible speeds, and if we succeed, we can end the season ahead of the Scuderia. Last year they were fast on this track, but this season we were often surprised that completely different teams were successful in different races, so we are ready for any development.

It looks like Ferrari has a small lead over us in qualifying this year, but on Sunday things could very well be different and we could have a good race.

The season went very strangely. We were capable of a fast pace at times, but we never achieved the results that I thought we deserved and were possible. In many ways it was a season of missed opportunities, but when things went more or less smoothly, luck seemed to be on our side, and when things didn’t work out, we were also unlucky.

It’s not that I believe in luck – I believe we are the creators of our own luck, but we just have to be faster, and then Lady Luck will be with us.
