Oscar Piastri’s debut season in Formula 1 is coming to an end and despite all the difficulties it can be called successful. The Australian McLaren driver climbed to the podium twice and was in 9th place in the individual standings at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.
Oscar Piastri: “Abu Dhabi is a good place to end the season and I have pleasant memories of it because this is where I won the Formula 2 title, so I am happy to come back here.
It’s always nice to finish the championship here, it’s warm, the weather is nice and Abu Dhabi is halfway between Australia. Overall I like it here. However, I won’t be able to fly straight to my home country from here, as much as I would like to, but I still have to work with the team.
I think we have to be much more competitive this weekend than we were in Las Vegas. We knew we would have some problems there, due to the fact that it is a completely new circuit and because of the increased air resistance that is characteristic of the McLaren car. But I think the pace of the race largely reflected our potential, but we made some mistakes, especially in qualifying. I hope we can compete at the forefront again in Abu Dhabi.
I am confident that our pace will allow us to finish the race ahead of Aston Martin and maintain fourth place in the Constructors’ Championship. If we act correctly and show what our car is capable of, everything will be fine. I hope we will be fast and compete on the front row, and that the results will follow.
My debut season in Formula 1 is coming to an end, it taught me a lot, but among other things I realized that you can never relax, that it is better not to make mistakes, because in F1 they are much more expensive than in Formula 1 .other series. There are the best riders and the most competitive teams here, and if you calm yourself down even a little, you suddenly start losing time, losing positions.
I think that was one of the most important lessons, although I learned a lot of specific skills related to piloting, with the right approach to spending energy, but even if you perform at a good level you still can’t rest on your laurels. But even though this year is the busiest year of my life and it’s clear I had a lot less free time, I still enjoyed everything.”
