No rain is expected in Abu Dhabi this weekend, but the FIA has opted to test a new rain protection solution this weekend.
At the end of the first session, the message ‘low grip’ appears on the Race Control display. Using special software, all standard red rain lights on each car turn on at the same time.
Previously, riders had to turn them on manually, with the risk that they wouldn’t work if conditions deteriorated, but now this happens automatically.
Nils Wittich, FIA Racing Director: “Once all cars have crossed the finish line at the end of the first practice session, the Double Yellow Flags and Low Grip mode are activated. After 20 seconds the Low Grip system switches off. After another 10 seconds the VSC system is activated. After approximately 20 seconds, VSC will turn off.”
If the tests are successful, the solution could be implemented as early as next year.
