Formula 2 is basically a youth series, but there are no formal age restrictions, so a fully mature person could be behind the wheel due to certain circumstances. That is exactly what will happen this weekend: in the Austrian stage of the season in the Campos, the injured Ralf Boschung is replaced by 31-year-old Roberto Meri.
For the Spanish driver, this is not the first return to F2, but it is interesting that he made his debut in this championship after the Formula 1 season, where he played for the Russian team Marissia in 2015, but very weak, so he earned no points.
In 2017 he spent a few races in F2 for Campos, then moved to Rapax, and the following year drove a full season in this series, but also changed teams, driving MP Motorsport and Campos cars and even climbed the podium twice.
Overall, Mary has a very diverse track record, including not only Formula 1, but also the DTM touring car series, endurance racing and the exotic Australian S5000 Tasman Series, and this year he is competing in the Japanese Super GT Championship. And now he will spend at least two races in F2 for Spain’s Campos Racing, where he has been known for a long time.
The Swiss Ralph Boschung has not yet managed to get rid of neck problems that give him very painful feelings. This forced him to interrupt appearances in three of the last four stages of F2, including this one repeated at Silverstone.
“The last few months have been difficult, after the stage in Imola, neck problems have become a defining circumstance in my daily and professional life,” Ralph admitted. “It’s very difficult to leave the team like this in the middle of the season, but I really need to heal this injury. I thank my sponsors and the team for their support. I wish Roberto the best of luck in Austria – I’m happy to give him the opportunity to drive my car, he’s a good friend of mine and a great driver.”
“I will do everything I can to get good results and justify the trust of Ralph, his sponsors and Campos Racing,” said Meri. “The last time I drove an F2 car was in 2018, specifically for Campos Racing, and I was on the podium in Abu Dhabi. I really like the track in Spielberg, it’s a good place to come back.”
Team Principal Adrian Campos Jr. added: “Unfortunately Ralf will not be able to start in Austria as the season has been a nightmare for him since Imola and we cannot compete at full strength yet. But I am sure he will do everything he can to make a full recovery and return as soon as possible.
I also welcome Roberta, who will temporarily replace Ralph. We expect to adapt quickly and this weekend will be positive for us.”
