McLaren Racing and Mercedes-Benz announced the extension of the contract for the supply of engines for the period from 2026 to 2030. The British team became the first Mercedes customer to have their engines built according to the new technical regulations on an equal footing with the factory team used.
Mercedes engines first appeared in McLaren cars in 1995. The team used the German manufacturer’s power plants until 2014, then resumed cooperation in 2021.
Toto Wolff, Head of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: “Collaboration with strong customer teams is the cornerstone of our motorsport strategy. This has many benefits: competition sets the bar to aim for, accelerates technical learning and generally strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s Formula 1 business.
McLaren has been our strong and fair competitor since 2021, especially in the second half of this season. McLaren’s strong performance underlines the importance of transparent and equal support for all customer teams in Formula 1 if we are to achieve the goal of seeing all ten teams competing for the podium.”
Markus Schaefer, Member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Group AG, Chief Technology Officer: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with McLaren Racing at least until the end of this decade. This long-term agreement reflects our mutual trust and commitment to the strategy for the further development of the engine industry. Together we are preparing for 2026, when a new era will dawn in Formula 1 in terms of creating innovative power units integrated with electrical systems.”
Hywel ThomasManaging Director of Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP): “We have a long and proud history with McLaren and we are pleased to confirm that our business relationship will continue when the new engine regulations come into effect.
By signing these agreements now, two seasons before the transition to 2026 engines, we have an excellent opportunity to correctly calculate our total efforts and distribute them over the remaining period.”
Zac BrownCEO of McLaren Racing: “Mercedes-Benz are excellent and reliable partners to our Formula 1 team. The extension of this business relationship means that our shareholders and the entire team have confidence in their powertrains and approve of the direction we have taken in the run-up to the transition to new technical regulations.
Together we have achieved success, both in the last three seasons and in the period before that, when Mercedes was the engine supplier for our team. We therefore look forward to continuing our work successfully and expect to regularly compete at the forefront.”
Andrea StellaTeam Principal McLaren: “We are pleased to confirm the extension of our long-term powertrain supply agreements with Mercedes-Benz until the new technical regulations come into effect.
We and Mercedes have a close business relationship, based on deep trust. They support our desire to return to the leadership group, and to continue on this upward trajectory, it is very important to maintain our stable relationship. I would like to thank Merecedes for their partnership and we are ready to continue it in the coming years.”
