Pujolar: Upgrade race starts from Imola

After three stages of the season, Ferrari leads both championship standings with confidence, while Red Bull Racing and Mercedes are lagging behind for some reason. One is plagued by reliability issues, the other has not yet been able to improve the efficiency of the new machine.

But from the first race of the European stage of the season, with the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the situation in the championship will start to change, says Hevi Pujolar, Alfa Romeo’s chief race engineer. First of all, this is due to the fact that the pace of equipment modernization will increase rapidly, including the new items that will be presented by the team from Hinvil, which started the season much more successfully than in previous years.

“I think the modernization race will start from Imola, and we’ll see which teams will introduce the most new products,” said an experienced Spanish engineer who has worked in Formula 1 for over twenty years. – Of course we will also try to participate in this race. I think the coming stages will be very interesting and we will see how the teams are refining the equipment.

We are also striving for progress, as we want to close the gap on those ahead, and leave those who are lagging far behind.”

The team’s confidence is bolstered by the good racing pace of Valtteri Bottas and Guangyu Zhou in the Alfa Romeo C42 cars. This does not partly compensate for the highest results in qualifying, as both manage to regain positions at the distance of the race.

The Imola weekend will feature a sprint on Saturday for the first time this year. Pujolar thinks this will also help the riders of the team to show a high result: “You can say that the qualifying sprint format gives us a good chance. Let’s see who will showcase which innovations at Imola, but we hope both of our cars can compete for points.

It can be assumed that this format also suits Zhou, because it gives him the opportunity to show what he is capable of. I think he is a very good driver and thanks to the sprint he can win a few more positions.”
