The teams proposed their own version of the sprint format

On Friday, the FIA issued a press release following the meeting of the Formula 1 Commission, in which it spoke about the decisions taken. There was talk about a change in the format of the race weekend with a sprint, but without any details.

BBC Sport managed to find out exactly how the teams propose to change the sprint format. If their proposal is approved, on Friday after the first and only training there will not be qualifying for the race on Sunday, as was the case in 2023, but qualifying for the sprint.

The Saturday program opens with the sprint itself, and a few hours after the finish the main qualifying for the main race on Sunday takes place.

Formula 1 has decided to change the format of the sprint weekend as it is believed the existing format is misleading to unprepared fans. The time difference between Friday afternoon qualifying and Sunday’s race is long, and the value of the Saturday sessions (sprint qualifying and sprint itself) is also questionable as they have minimal impact on the race weekend.

“It is clear that the sprint format needs further development,” says Red Bull Racing boss Christian Horner. “I understand the concept of having important events at the track on all three days, but the current schedule is a bit disappointing.”
