Pirelli predicts a one-stop strategy

The head of the Pirelli racing division, Mario Isola, summarized the results of qualifying in Abu Dhabi, which was won by Max Verstappen, and predicted the strategy of one pit stop in the race.

Mario Isola: “The season ends with another spectacular qualifying. In all three sessions there was a very fierce battle, and every little thing mattered. At the Yas Marina Circuit, lap times usually depend on the third sector. It is necessary not only to prepare the tires during the warm-up lap, but also to check the condition of the tires during the attempt, so that the tires in the third sector remain in the best possible condition. This factor creates even more uncertainty in a situation where the differences are minimal.

If we talk about tomorrow’s race, almost all teams held two hard sets. This suggests that teams prefer the C3 composition.

In theory, the one-stop strategy will give you the fastest way through the race: start on Medium and then switch to Hard. The two-stop strategy involves starting on Medium and then doing two stints on Hard – also an acceptable option if the safety car is on track in the second part of the race.

It is difficult to imagine that anyone would decide to use the soft compound C5 unless he was betting on the final laps to gain an advantage over the racers on hard tires due to the soft and empty tanks.”
