Max Verstappen has won qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. For the Red Bull Racing driver, Saturday’s pole was the 12th of the season and the 32nd of his career. The previous eight races at the Yas Marina Circuit were won from pole position and the reigning world champion wants to continue that streak.
Max’s teammate Sergio Perez set the fifth fastest time in the decisive attempt, but his lap was canceled for a violation and Sergio dropped to ninth place in the protocol.
Max Verstappen (1st): “I had problems with the car all weekend, which is very strange. We definitely improved before qualifying. From the very first lap the car seemed more controlled, which allowed me to attack harder. Of course I’m very happy to have won pole position.
The usual situation on this track is that if the car skids you lose a lot of time. This is exactly what happened to me during practice, but in qualifying the car turned out to be more collected.
I have no idea how fast we will be in the race, but usually we have a good lead. We had a special season and enjoyed it. The team is proud of this year’s performance.”
Sergio Perez (9th): “The situation looked very good – I was very competitive in the first and second parts of qualifying, but unfortunately I couldn’t match all the pieces in the final. Things got worse when my lap times were removed. I had handling problems that caused me to exceed the track limits in the first corner. The circle as a whole was not the cleanest.
The aim of the race is to get on the podium. None of the teams have information on who will be fastest in the race, so we will see how events develop. Everything can happen.”
