Hamilton: I believe we can win the race this year

Ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton said the progress Mercedes has made recently gives hope that he can still fight for victories this season. To date, the seven-time world champion remains the only driver in Formula 1 history to win the Grand Prix in all years of his career.

“Two consecutive podiums show that we are moving in the right direction,” BBC Sport quoted him as saying. – We have to keep working, and let’s hope we can get closer to the leaders, and this gives chances of victory. I really believe we will be able to win the race this year.

Certainly, at the beginning of the season I was not sure if our car would allow us to fight for victories, although this is not the right attitude. It looked like we wouldn’t be able to catch up with the front runners for a long time because it was clear that everyone was also progressing.

At Barcelona we upgraded the car and this was already a noticeable step forward, although there were several difficult races at the time, but after the last two Grand Prix we had high expectations. Still, the car has potential.

At Silverstone we could fight for the win, that’s for sure. But for this everything should go well, given the real speed of W13, because so far we are not at the level where the teams ahead of us are. In Austria we have always had problems because we know what combination of corners there is on this track, so it is unlikely that we will win here. However, this does not mean that it is impossible.

The weather is changeable, and while I hope we will have a pleasant surprise tomorrow, but I could be wrong. And yet there is still hope.”

Hamilton also spoke about the horrific accident Guanyu Zhou suffered at the start of the British Grand Prix: “We are racing at insane speeds and taking real risks. Sometimes people take it for granted. But we’re not just going around in circles – there are areas where we’re at risk, and this needs to be understood.

Zhou’s accident shows that we need to keep improving safety. If the car is behind the barrier and the driver can’t get out of the cockpit, something has to be done to prevent this from happening again. But sometimes such incidents open our eyes, and we see how much remains to be done…”
