George Russell finished third in Abu Dhabi and helped Mercedes retain second place in the Constructors’ Championship…
Q: You helped Mercedes maintain second place in the Constructors’ Championship. How important is this to you?
George Russell: Good weekend. I am very happy that I can finish on such a high level at the end of such a difficult season. This year we did not achieve the results we deserved. The car was often fast, but the results continually eluded us. This time luck was on our side, partly due to Sergio’s penalty.
Question: Apparently the race wasn’t easy for you…
George Russell: I have been very ill for the past two weeks. In Vegas I didn’t really sleep because of the high temperature, I just felt terrible. And then I was followed by a cough that persisted in the car. I was coughing every round, but when you’re stuck tight you can’t take a deep breath to clear your throat. I was happy when I saw the finish flag.
Q: Are there any positives from W14 that you would like to take into next year? Or do you want to start all over again?
George Russell: For next season we are going to build a car from scratch. The positive thing is that we are not scratching our heads about the reasons for the gap to Red Bull. We know the car has a lot of weaknesses. This motivates all our employees at base to make serious progress next season.
It is clear that Red Bull is going to take a step forward. But I am confident that in the first race of next season we will be in better shape than this year.
