Vettel: As always, it all depends on the little things

At Silverstone, Sebastian Vettel drove Nigel Mansell’s 1992 Williams-Renault on his birthday and scored points in the race. The German spoke in Austria on Thursday about his impressions…

Sebastian Vettel: “Behind the wheel of Williams you can immediately feel how light the cars of that generation were compared to today. Once the tires were warm, the car itself seemed to say: faster, faster! The shifting was very difficult, but how easily you can throw the car into corners is amazing. Coming out of slow corners in a 1992 Williams I was probably faster than I was in a modern car.

I only did a few laps, but it was fun. For me it was fundamental to use synthetic fuel. I wanted to show that historic cars can also be used in a sustainable way.”

On Thursday, the decisions of the stewards of the British Grand Prix, or rather their absence, were discussed in the paddock that Fernando Alonso was dissatisfied with, but Sebastian takes this calmly…

Sebastian Vettel: “In the case of Verstappen and me, Max was faster anyway. But I saw several fights, it seems to me that it was good not to interfere. We racers feel where the limit is. I have no problem with a hard but fair fight.

It’s hard to say what we can say in Spielberg. At Silverstone we were unable to drive far to work with new products due to changeable weather. Here we continue with this work, but this is a weekend with a sprint race, where we qualify immediately after an hour of practice.

As always, it all depends on the little things. If all goes well, we can get into the top ten. If things don’t go so well, we can already fly out in the first part of qualifying.

You know, this year I was sure the surface would be slippery on some tracks, but it turned out to be a lot bumpier because of the hard suspension setup in modern cars. Let’s see what the Red Bull Ring will actually feel like behind the wheel of a car in 2022.

I also heard that it could rain again – that’s another factor.”
