On the opening lap of the British Grand Prix, George Russell was the culprit in a serious accident involving Guanyu Zhou, but when the race was stopped he did not stay in the cockpit but tried to help, preventing him from participating in the restart later – his car was evacuated.
On Thursday, the Briton recalled that situation in Spielberg…
George Russell: “It’s a natural reaction. I was sure my car was broken. The race was stopped with red flags and I ran to the crash site. It was terrible to see that he was blocked and couldn’t get out on his own. It was clear that with him everything was fine, he moved, but the situation was still unpleasant.
I couldn’t remember it then, but in 2008 I had a similar incident in karting. The kart rolled over and I was underneath it, burning my hand on the exhaust pipe, but another rider stopped and helped me out.
The rider is already cramped in the car – in a helmet, with a headrest and Halo. We are not claustrophobic, but there are a lot of tires on the side that rob you of your freedom.
Between the gate and the barrier was a gap into which he fell. It is clear that this problem needs to be solved. I saw the video from the fans’ cameras. The security ring was broken. Serious accidents happen in motorsport about once a year. You have to draw conclusions from every accident.
I was sure my car was broken too, but it turned out not to be. It is a pity that I could not achieve the restart – it was possible to get a good result.
