This year Fernando Alonso has been fined repeatedly for actions on track – and is surprised that the stewards at Silverstone interpreted the rules much more gently…
Fernando Alonso: “I think we will raise this issue at the briefing tomorrow. On Monday I watched the recording of the race, and even more than Charles’ displacement on the straight, I was surprised by the battle between Leclerc, Pérez and Hamilton.
On TV it looked spectacular, but at the beginning of the year it was strictly forbidden to leave the track. Black on white. And now it turns out that you can get off the track and continue the fight in the next corner? This is a very different interpretation of the rules than before. And I want to clarify things.
We need to talk about this. Obviously when you drive side by side and push someone off the track, there are different scenarios, different maneuvers and different turns. It is always difficult to evaluate such episodes. But we were probably told that the white line clearly defines whether you have broken the rules or not. And suddenly this rule is no longer used in Silverstone.
In Miami I was judged by the same rules, in the FIA they believed I had an advantage, although I immediately returned it. And at Silverstone we saw a clear advantage because in the next corner you could fight from the inside as well as the outside. And they weren’t fined for it. I am confused.
I’m not criticizing the stewards, but trying to understand how we can act and how not to. Flight attendants have a tough job. I’m not saying everything was right or wrong at Silverstone. I say we need to understand the rules better. They are here to help us and monitor the progress of the race. We just have to make sure we understand the rules the same way.”
