Williams remains the only championship team to formally have a vacancy for 2024, as only Alex Albon’s multi-year contract has been officially confirmed, but Logan Sargent’s prospects are in doubt.
At first glance, everything makes sense: it was Albon who scored 27 of the 28 points scored by the team during the season, which put Williams in 7th place in the Constructors’ Championship, and this is the team’s best result since 2017. On the one hand, Sargent has learned a lot over 22 championship races, on the other hand, his progress can hardly be called convincing. There has been talk for some time that he could be replaced by, for example, the talented New Zealander Liam Lawson. While it is clear that reaching an agreement with Red Bull and implementing such a scenario will not be easy, the chances of this happening are slim. However, this is not the only option, as there is also a promising Brazilian, Aston Martin reservist Felipe Drugovich.
At the same time, when asked about Sargent’s future fate, James Vowles tries to avoid a direct answer.
“I’m afraid you’re getting ahead of yourself, but no matter how they develop, Logan has been part of the Williams Racing Academy for many years and will remain there,” Vowles responded diplomatically after the finish of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. in which the American driver took 16th place. “He is a fast rider and if you look back at the last five races he has continuously made progress and improvements.
“We see signs that he is doing exactly what it takes to earn a spot in the team, but we can’t confirm that yet.”
