Esteban Ocon led the charge for a single day of post-season testing in Abu Dhabi, with the teams running both new tires for 2024 and young drivers whose chances of making it into Formula 1 next season are highly unlikely.
The team has allocated one car for tire testing, the other for young drivers. The tests started 25 minutes late due to a delay in the arrival of a medical helicopter and were interrupted three times by red flags. First due to a water leak from a nearby hotel, then due to George Russell’s accident in turn six – the cause was car trouble. Forty minutes before the end of the session, Red Bull youth program participant Ayumu Iwasa, driving an AlphaTauri, stopped on track due to problems with the power plant.
The results were solid. The leader in distance completed was Pietro Fittipaldi, who completed 130 laps during the day; Robert Schwartzman was only slightly behind him – 123 laps, which put him higher in the protocol.
The main drivers worked with new tire compounds for the next season, the young people, who had to invite the teams, worked out a mandatory program.
The 2023 season is over!
