Alonso: The team deserves more than fifth place

Aston Martin finished the season in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, the British carmaker’s best result since returning to Formula 1 in 2021. Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso admits the season has been excellent, but adds that the team deserves more.

Fernando Alonso: “Fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship is a bit disappointing because we thought we could do better. At least at the beginning of the year we had hoped for more.

My fourth place finish in the individual competition seems a bit surreal, just like the guys I was competing against. If a team finishes fifth in the Constructors’ Championship, the drivers usually finish in ninth or tenth place in the Drivers’ Championship. So it has been a dream season for many at Aston Martin, including myself.

In fact, the season is historic. Eight podiums and almost three hundred points earned – we couldn’t even think about that twelve months ago. This is the best season in team history, whatever it’s called. This year is definitely worth remembering.

This season we have exceeded expectations, and next year expectations will be even higher, which will put some pressure on us. It would be bad if we took a step back in 2024. We have to keep moving forward.

After fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, we have to improve next year. Fourth, third and second places are welcome. After eight podium finishes this year, I hope for something similar next year.”
