Sainz Sr. complains of severe pain after the accident

Yesterday, Carlos Sainz Sr., the famous Spanish rally driver and father of the Ferrari team driver, was involved in a serious accident during the Extreme E electric off-road series on the island of Sardinia.

Sainz took the lead at the start of the final race, but then on a narrow track, the SUV of reigning Extreme E champion Johan Kristoffersson, who drives for Rosberg X Racing, collided with his car, Nico Rosberg’s team.

The Sainz XE team’s car flew off the track and overturned several times, but the driver remained conscious and was able to get out of the cab on his own, before being sent to hospital for an examination.

Kristoffersson, whose car suffered less, was able to continue driving and even win the last race, but he was fined for being the culprit: 30 seconds were added to his result and the Swede lost first place.

And the victory went to the crew of the American team GMC Hummer EV Chip Ganassi Racing.

After an examination at a local hospital, Carlos Sainz was discharged and then commented on the incident: “Fortunately, the results of all checkups are normal and I was discharged from the hospital, although I am in severe pain.

Anyway what happened on the track I was very upset but even more disappointed by the fact that the perpetrator of the incident was only given a 30 second penalty. In my 40 years in motorsport, this was one of the most serious accidents for which there was no exemplary penalty.

Thank you everyone for the messages of support.”

Nico Rosberg’s team commentary was as concise as possible: “We dropped to 3rd place because of the penalty. Of course this is frustrating, but we respect the stewards’ opinion and are very happy that Sainz is doing well.
