Formula 2: Prema drivers lead on first test day

Oliver Berman was fastest on the first day of testing in Abu Dhabi, 0.165 seconds ahead of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, his new Prema teammate. The Briton achieved his best lap in Wednesday’s second session in 1:36.092 on soft tyres.

At the same time, the minutes of the morning session were headed by Victor Marten, who put a lot of effort during the season to ensure that ART Grand Prix took first place in the team competition. The French driver’s best time was 1:36.852, which he achieved on Medium tyres.

Literally five minutes after the start of testing, Oliver Goethe’s car stopped before Turn 6, causing red flags to appear. But at the end of the first hour of the session they had to be suspended a second time because of Goethe – the Trident team car stopped on the track again.

But as soon as the races resumed, the session was immediately interrupted again due to a stop in the 7th corner of car no. 22 of team Van Amersfoort Racing with Enzo Fittipaldi at the wheel.

Over the next hour, the best result remained with Jack Crawford, who will drive for the DAMS team in 2024 and drive his car in tests for the first time. He was the first to get past 1 minute 38 seconds, but with around two hours to go in the session he caused another red flag when he parked at Turn 8.

The fifth time they had to be hung was because of Ritomo Miata, the reigning Super Formula champion. He was driving a Rodin Carlin car, but something happened to it and he too had to stop on the track.

Closer to the lunch break, the speeds started to increase, Viktor Matren was the first to cross the 1-minute mark. 37 seconds, after which I rode even faster the next lap. The only driver to complete a lap with a comparable time in the first session was Enzo Fittipaldi.

During the day’s session, the drivers mainly worked on long sets of laps, and when about an hour and a half down three, Berman took the lead and Antonelli moved to the second line of the protocol. 45 minutes before the end of the day, Oliver and Kimi improved, and when they switched to soft tires, which happened at the very end of the session, Berman showed the best time on Wednesday.

The second session was held without red flags, but in the afternoon fourteen lap times were canceled for exceeding track limits, with eight different drivers found to be the offenders. Amaury Cordil and Isaac Hajjar also received warnings because they rehearsed the start in the wrong place on the track.
