Last week, McLaren announced the extension of its contract with Mercedes for the supply of power units until 2030. Team manager Zak Brown said that under the terms of the new contract, McLaren can influence the layout of the power plant and cannot adapt the chassis to the end product, as is happening now.
Zac Brown: “I believe you can win a title by being a customer team. I don’t want to go into the details of the new contract, but we have clarified the areas where we may be at a disadvantage compared to the factory team. We now have an excellent contract with Mercedes High-Performance Powertrains.
We have gained influence that we did not have before. This means that we are aware of all details earlier during the development of the drivetrain and can influence them.
There will no longer be situations where we don’t know what we are dealing with, and we simply receive a completed engine on a certain date. Thanks to this, not much later than the factory team we will start developing the layout of the car in the power plant area.
