Isaac Hadjar won qualifying for the fifth round of the Formula 3 season in Spielberg. For the French Hitech GP rider this is the first pole of his career in the youth series.
Formula 3 morning practice took place on a wet track, but the sunny weather during qualifying contributed to productive work. After two warm-up laps, the riders started to attack with full force.
Enzo Trulli was the first to set the fastest time, but his result was almost immediately surpassed by a large group of riders led by Roman Stanek. The battle for the best time unfolded between Stanek, Victor Martin, Isaac Hadjar and Arthur Leclerc.
In the twelfth minute, yellow flags appeared on the track because of Zdenek Chovanek, who stopped at the entrance of the pitlane. There were no red flags – the Charouz racer was soon able to move on.
Marten remained the leader of the first set of fast laps, ahead of Oliver Berman and Arthur Leclerc. Alexander Smolyar, who returned to the wheel after missing the podium at Silverstone, set the fifteenth fastest time.
After a short break, the riders returned to the track on new tires and continued to fight for pole position. At the time of returning to the pitlane track, there was a light touch of the cars between Oliver Berman and Zach O’Sullivan. The stewards will review the incident after qualifying, but it is highly likely that Berman will be fined for entering the track unsafely.
The length of the circle in Spielberg is just over four kilometers so there was some serious traffic on the track on the last set of circles. Isaac Hadjar, however, was able to surpass Marten’s previous record.
Red flags stopped two minutes before the end of qualifying. Chovanek again became the reason – the Sharouz racer went off the track in the first corner, where he stopped for no apparent reason.
They decided not to resume qualifying, which allowed Hajjar to retain the lead. Champion leader Viktor Marten will start with him from the front row on Sunday. Arthur Leclerc set the fourth fastest time, Alexander Smolyar qualified sixteenth.
On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. For example, Chao Collet of MP Motorsport will start the race from pole position tomorrow.
