Max Verstappen is already a very confident leader in the Formula 1 driver standings. He is now heading to the track he and his Red Bull team have dominated in recent years, a place where his team literally owns the track.

After a tough race for Verstappen last week at Silverstone, he is back as the favorite to win the Austrian Grand Prix. Ferrari in England snapped Red Bull’s six-game winning streak, but the championship fate remains in the hands of Verstappen and his team.

The sprint race returns to the program this weekend. And for the first time, it will be held in Austria. Earlier this season the sprint already took place at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the third and last will take place at Interlagos at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Spielberg has hosted Formula 1 racing in its current configuration since 1997. Red Bull bought the track in 2011 and renamed it.

Verstappen has won four of his last six races at the Red Bull Ring, including two dominating victories last season. The high altitude seemed to help the Red Bull car last year. Thin air and the possibility of high temperatures can make this track difficult for cars.

The circuit has been familiar for the past two seasons as it hosted two Grands Prix in 2020 and 2021 as F1 officials struggled to find tracks during the coronavirus pandemic.

It is one of the shortest circuits on the Formula 1 calendar, at just under 4.3 km. It’s also one of the hardest tracks to qualify, so it makes sense to add a sprint race.

All the main rivals are slightly behind Verstappen at Silverstone, but his lead is still significant. Fernando Alonso has scored points in five consecutive races. Only Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton have longer streaks.

Ferrari closed the huge gap to Red Bull for the second race in a row, now 63 points behind. Mercedes has six podiums in 10 races, including third places in the last three Grands Prix.

Leclerc has six poles against two for Verstappen and Ferrari has seven poles against three for Red Bull.
