The Berlin round of the World Electric Car Racing Championship is scheduled for the second weekend of May, but it has already been announced that the configuration of the circuit, built on the territory of the old Templehof airport, will be changed.
The Formula E race in Berlin appeared on the electric series calendar in 2015 and has since taken place only once at another circuit in the center of the German capital, and on other occasions it has been hosted at the Templehof circuit, and its configuration has changed more than once.
The latest version was 2,335 meters long and had 362 overtakes during the double weekend races in Berlin last year. Now the organizers plan to go further: for the next race, the circuit will be extended and more corners will be added.
Formula E introduced an updated ring configuration, the length of which was increased to 2585 m, and now has 15 turns. It has been developed by championship specialists responsible for designing the circuits.
“The new layout of the Berlin Templehof circuit retains the character of the old circuit, but at the same time the drivers and the team will have to overcome new challenges,” said Pablo Martino, the FIA representative responsible for sports affairs in Formula E. . “They will have to demonstrate all their skills, and there will also be a real test of their ability to spend energy efficiently.
The combination of fast, medium and slow corners increases the choice of settings, allowing different drivers to gain an advantage in different parts of the lap, and two key overtaking zones ensure the racing will be an exciting scenario.”
