Max Verstappen won the Austrian Grand Prix qualifying with his third pole position of the season. His Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez set the fourth fastest time in the final and lost more than four tenths to Max.
Max Verstappen (1st): “The qualifying final turned out to be difficult – it’s always unpleasant to wait a long time for the session to resume. On the last try, I didn’t get through the first and third turns in the best way, so I knew I had to do something at the end of the circle. I managed to pass the third sector better than in previous attempts, without breaking the limits of the track.
Good qualification with minimal margins. We knew the battle would be tight, so it’s nice to be at the forefront.
Tomorrow the battle continues. During the season the situation does not change – sometimes we are a little ahead, sometimes – Ferrari. Usually qualifying is our weak point and at the distance of the race our car looks faster. Hopefully nothing will change tomorrow and we will be competitive in the sprint.”
Sergio Perez (4th): “Difficult day – everything didn’t work, from the first training session. We need to understand the reason – I hope I can recoup on Saturday.
In qualifying I couldn’t find a rhythm. As I said, you have to understand the reasons, but now all the focus is on Sunday’s sprint and race. I will not give up and will try to make the best progress in the sprint to get a high position at the start of Sunday’s race.
