Andrea Stella believes that Oscar Piastri has a special natural quality that sets him apart from even the best Formula 1 drivers. The McLaren team boss is impressed by the progress the young Australian has shown during his debut season.
“One of the most important components that allows us to achieve high speeds is the character of the driver, his human qualities,” said Stella, answering the question of what impresses him most about Oscar. – He is very calm. I think he has excellent control over his condition, allowing him to make full use of his talent.
Personally, I don’t have this quality. I have to make an active effort to control my emotions, I have to think about my psychological state in order to work as productively as possible. Oscar seems to take this for granted.”
Stella had a successful career in Formula 1 and during his time at Ferrari he worked with both Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso. The experience of working with these drivers, considered among the best in the history of the championship, allows Andrea to assess Oscar Piastri.
“Maybe Oscar has all these qualities naturally, or maybe he consciously worked on them earlier in his career – I don’t know. But it is clear that he is a great racer in this regard,” Stella continued. – Even taking into account the fact that I have seen great riders, both in previous years and now, but all of them at times fell below their maximum, because they could not maintain the state in which they achieved the best results.
But I think Oscar does it naturally.
Piastri finished the season in 9th place in the individual standings, and this is a pretty decent result for a Formula 1 newcomer, who only got a really fast car in the second half of the championship.
