Kubica: Max, Lewis and Fernando are just aliens

In 2024, Robert Kubica will finally try on the Ferrari uniform: the Pole has signed a contract with the AF Corse team and next year he will drive a Ferrari hypercar on the WEC circuits. And he was once expected to be Fernando Alonso’s partner – this was when the two-time world champion played for the Scuderia – but Kubica’s career was put on hold for a long time after a dramatic accident on a rally circuit in February 2011.

But he still has friendly relations with Fernando, and Robert, speaking about Alonso, believes that the Spaniard simply has an unearthly level of natural talent and skills. Kubica spoke about this and much more during her participation in the Italian podcast Gurulandia.

“From my point of view, even if he drives a non-competitive car, Fernando Alonso is still the strongest,” says Robert. – But I have always said that the real Formula 1 is the first two or three rows of the starting field. But when you’re racing at the back of the pack, it’s a different sport.

The point is that if you wear a Red Bull uniform and the car makes you go half a second faster, you are on the podium. But if you’re new, even a phenomenally talented driver driving a Williams or other small team car will find it difficult to even finish in the top 15. The slower the car, the more difficult it is for a beginner to drive it.

But at the same time I also believe that 90% of the riders who made it to the top teams should have gotten there anyway. Because you see that drivers like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton or Fernando Alonso are real aliens. In general, you have to be very lucky: to get the opportunity to get behind the wheel of a fast car that is comfortable to drive, you have to be in the right place at the right time.”
