Pirelli’s racing division head Mario Isola summarized Friday’s qualifying results for the Austrian Grand Prix and suggested soft tires would be the main choice for Saturday’s sprint.
Mario Isola: “We saw another session with a very tight fight, after which the top three passed in just 0.082 seconds. Just think what a chasm it is! These results show how competitive today’s Formula 1 cars and tires are.
Today we saw minimal wear on the Soft tires, which could make this compound the most important for tomorrow’s sprint – no pit stops required and the tanks will not be completely filled, which will reduce the load on the rubber .
The weather forecast predicts rain for Sunday morning, but the afternoon is expected to be the same as the first practice, so it seems that the teams have been able to gather some useful information today.”
