Race in Madrid and the Alonso factor

Rumors that in the near future, and specifically from 2026, the national Spanish leg of the Football World Cup will take place in Madrid have specific grounds. Negotiations between Formula 1 and the authorities of the capital of Spain have been going on for some time, especially in the summer, said Jose Vincente de los Mosos, director of the IFEMA exhibition complex, on the territory of which the circuit is built stated that a provisional agreement had already been concluded with FOM.

However, the Spanish press, analyzing the situation, writes about certain, and quite serious, difficulties that do not yet make it possible to make an official statement on the subject.

During the race weekend in Abu Dhabi, representatives of the Spanish side actually discussed with Formula 1 management the possibility of publicly announcing their plans, but the catch is that the current contract of the Barcelona circuit to host the Spanish Grand Prix to be organized runs until 2026. inclusive. Adjusting these deadlines will require separate negotiations, including compensation in some form, especially as Stefano Domenicali recently assured that Formula 1 intends to honor all existing agreements.

According to Marca newspaper, Madrid still insists that the first race in the capital should take place in 2026. One of the reasons has to do with Formula 1’s transition to new technical regulations, which always creates extra interest. And the promoters want their new race to mark the start of a new era in the championship’s history.

But there is another equally important factor: they dream that Fernando Alonso will participate in this race, who, it seems, will race for Aston Martin only until 2026. Of course, a star of such magnitude as a two-time world champion can capture the attention of thousands of Spanish and European fans.

The name of the private company involved in the Madrid project has not yet been mentioned, but Marca writes that the organizers of the future race are already guided by the example of Miami and Las Vegas, and want their event to be premium in nature, i.e. First of all, it will be aimed at a wealthy audience, so tickets for it will clearly cost more than for a ‘regular’ Formula 1 race.

Rumor has it that Madrid will pay 60 million euros for the right to organize the Spanish Grand Prix, despite the fact that the construction of the circuit will cost more than 100 million euros. And if the race were to take place in 2026, the deadlines would start to get tight as there are still about 27 days left for all the preparations.

Naturally, Barcelona does not want to lose the Grand Prix, which has had a permanent home on the Catalan circuit since 1991. According to the current situation, the race should take place there in 2026 and negotiations are underway to extend the contract. However, the promoters of the Barcelona stage can make concessions by, for example, giving the 2026 race to Madrid but getting it back in 2027, with the locations alternating in the future.

Moreover, it cannot be excluded that in just a few years the authors of the Madrid project will become disillusioned with the economy, and then the national Grand Prix may return to Barcelona, where they have learned to overcome the problems over the years . different types of financial problems.

By the way, it seems that this is a simple formality that can be handled at any time, but still: the Spanish National Automobile Federation has not yet received an official request from the organizers of the race in Madrid to hold the Grand Prix Prix on certain specific dates, or the final route design option. Although it is this organization that is authorized to communicate with the FIA .
