Toto Wolff: We are surprised by today’s speed

In Spielberg, the Mercedes drivers could compete for pole position, but both ended qualifying with an accident…

Toto Wolff, sports director: “Our riders cannot blame themselves in this situation. Ten races in a row we couldn’t give them a decent car, and now, when it starts to go, the flight can take place. I’d rather have a fast car and such qualifications than no speed.

Yes, we are surprised by today’s speed. We have never been fast in Spielberg. Even in our best days, the Austrian stage was sometimes unsuccessful, so we didn’t expect a big step forward this weekend. But little by little it gets better.”

Lewis Hamilton (10th): “The blow was hard, but I’m fine. I’m incredibly disappointed myself and I apologize to the team. They did a lot of work on my car and I don’t like to send it back damaged .

Today we fought in the top three, but in corner 7 I lost control of the rear of the car. I don’t know why it happened. But I’m inspired by the speed of our car. We did not expect to be so close to the leaders today.

I start behind, but tomorrow we have a sprint on Saturday, in which we can try to earn back. I hope I can make up for the chance I lost today.”

George Russell (5th): “I think it was our best qualifying in terms of pace this year, but the worst in terms of results. This is sometimes the case in motorsport.

Today I could have shown the 4th fastest time and should have improved my result by a tenth – I gave it my all, thinking there was even a chance to move up to third position.

I feel fine physically, but I’m more concerned about the car. Hope we can fix it. In terms of speed, we have reason to be positive. We have brought some new products to Austria and in addition the interpretation of some provisions of the regulation is probably in our favour.

Lewis did a great job and showed great speed today. While we may have prepared the car for qualifying, we made a few mistakes with the settings, but we hope they will work well for the race. Normally our race pace is better than one quick lap, but let’s hope we can bounce back tomorrow.”
