Paul Stoddart: This season will go down in history

Former Minardi team boss Paul Stoddart summarized the season in a column on Racingnews365…

Paul Stoddart: “This season will go down in history with the triumph of Max Verstappen and Red Bull Racing – they deserve it.

Max’s 19 wins and Red Bull’s 21 wins are an achievement that people will talk about for a long time, when we are gone – the fans of the next generations will talk about it. It reminded me of the 1988 season with McLaren, when the team won fifteen of the sixteen races forty years ago with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost.

The only ones who can break this record are Red Bull and Max himself in 2024. Red Bull will be the main competitor next year, although repeating such a feat will be very difficult.

It is possible that McLaren, Mercedes, Ferrari and possibly Aston Martin can seriously improve and challenge Max.

I think Max will be one second per lap faster next season, but not in every race. It is possible that Red Bull will win only 18 of the 24 races next year. But it should be interesting.

With the 2023 season still fresh in our minds, we should not downplay Max’s achievements. It was a perfect season from a world-class rider who proved he can compete with the best of the best.

Of course there is a danger of repeating the effect of Lewis Hamilton or Michael Schumacher, where spectators were bored by the consistent victories of one driver, but fortunately we saw fierce competition in the entire field behind him.”
