Last season, the McLaren team surprised everyone not only with the progress they showed in the second half of the year, but also with the fastest pit stop in Formula 1 history, and now this achievement has been officially recorded in the Guinness Book ofRecords.
Representatives of the world-renowned publication recently visited the team’s base, the McLaren Technology Center in Woking, and presented an accompanying certificate confirming that a record pit stop was recorded during the Qatar Grand Prix, lasting just 1.80 seconds .
It was carried out on lap 27 by Lando Norris’ mechanics, and the driver was of course also present at the presentation of this certificate, together with the team that worked on his car. The record for the fastest pit stop was previously held by Red Bull Racing, this was 1.82 seconds and was achieved in 2019 during the Brazilian Grand Prix.
When Formula 1 switched to heavier 18-inch wheels and tires in 2022, there were suggestions that pit stop times would naturally increase, but gradually, through endless training, the team mechanics mastered changing wheels as quickly as before, and now the record has been broken, which took four years.
McLaren CEO Zak Brown, commenting on the visit of Guinness Book of Records representatives to Woking, was succinct: “Fast team!”
