In the Formula for Success podcast, David Coulthard recalled a meeting with Ferrari team boss Jean Todt about the contract.
David Coulthard: “I met Jean Todt at his apartment in Paris to talk about the possibility of driving for Ferrari.
As I recall, I was offered a co-pilot contract, but at that time I wouldn’t sign any contract unless it offered equal opportunity.
Even if I were fourth and Michael was fifth, I would have to let him pass. And I did not agree to such conditions.
I have to give credit to Ron Dennis and McLaren: the contract they offered me was always an equal opportunity. There was a clause that said I had to obey the team manager’s instructions regardless of the circumstances, but I was given a fair and equal opportunity to prove myself.”
