Max Verstappen won the sprint at the Red Bull Ring on Saturday, earning another eight points and consolidating his lead in the championship. And, perhaps most importantly, today’s win enables Dutchman Red Bull Racing to start from pole position in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix.
Max Verstappen: “It’s great that there is so much orange in the stands – at the end of the race the whole track was covered in orange smoke! I think we ran this sprint well, with a good pace at the start of the distance. In my opinion the rivals were running at about the same speed then – overall it was a good race! I had to attack with almost full power the entire distance, but that’s how the sprint should be.
It was important to have a good start and a good first lap, and then the Ferrari drivers decided to do some fighting, which allowed me to create a gap. After that we kind of caught up with the speed, so tomorrow we have another interesting fight.
Of course Sunday’s race will be much longer, so it will be more difficult to control tire wear. Tomorrow we will see what speed we are capable of and in the evening we will have to work on fine-tuning the cars, but in general we are competitive again this weekend.”
