Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz finished second and third in the sprint at Spielberg. In the early laps, Ferrari racers battled each other, but after nearly colliding several times, Carlos stopped trying to overtake his partner.
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “The sprint turned out to be difficult, especially the first laps. Max Verstappen was very fast and attacked with all my might and I decided to save the tires to counterattack closer to the finish.
Then I had a little fight with Carlos. Closer to the finish I started attacking and made a little bit behind Max – it was very close.
We have a match tomorrow. I hope we get off to a good start and put more pressure on Max. I hope Carlos and I can do it together.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “I had a good start, which allowed me to compete on the first lap – first with Max in the third corner and then with Charles. My partner and I had an interesting argument – as it should be. However, because I was driving close behind Charles, my tires overheated, forcing me to fall a bit behind him. So I’m done.
For tomorrow’s race we have to think about how we can increase the pace a little bit. In the early laps Max was able to pull away right away, but closer to the finish we started to overtake him a bit.
Tomorrow will be a long race, we will have different tires so anything can happen. It’s important that my partner and I both argue. Let’s do everything we can to get ahead of Max.
