Aston Martin started the 2023 season with six podium finishes in the first eight races. Then the team’s results began to decline, ending the season in fifth place in the Constructors’ Championship, while Fernando Alonso took fourth place in the Individual Championship.
Aston Martin boss Mike Krak expects the experience gained to be useful to the team in 2024, but is cautious about the chances in the new season.
Mike Krak: “The first six races of 2023 were incredible, but I knew challenging times were ahead. We tried to stay realistic and keep expectations in check. The competition in Formula 1 is very serious: some very good teams started the season badly, and we understood that if they solved their problems, they would force us to fight.
The middle of the season proved difficult for us and that was partly due to a good start, because expectations had seriously increased. Imagine if we didn’t have six podium finishes in the first eight races, but just one. Then our problems in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth stages wouldn’t seem like such a stark contrast to what we had at the beginning of the year. But if you get 23 points in the first race, expectations increase.
By the end of the season we understood our car, but it would be wrong to say that we understood absolutely all the features of the AMR23. But we have thought a lot and know in which direction we should work with the car of 2024. However, this does not mean that we will be fighting for victory in the first stage of next season in Bahrain.”
