McLaren made serious progress throughout the season, but team leader Andrea Stella wants to get his team out of the pressure of high expectations…
Andrea Stella: “In Formula 1 we have the opportunity to evaluate the results based on the numbers on the scoreboard. You see the progress you have made in the wind tunnel and on the computer simulator, you imagine yourself going two tenths, half a second, seven tenths faster at the start of the next season.
But everyone understands: to remain competitive next season, you still need half a second in reserve. Otherwise it will seem like you are going backwards, as we saw at the end of the season. Simply because you are stable and others are overtaking you.
First, we look at the data. We already know almost everything about the new car, but I’m not going to comment on it. We will continue based on this information. We should not create false expectations so as not to be disappointed later when we are confronted with reality.
On the other hand, we don’t want to set our expectations too low and then find out that we weren’t prepared to fight at the forefront and therefore didn’t make the right decisions.
So let’s do it with the data, stay realistic and take an honest approach. This is our philosophy.”
