Stefano Domenicali, CEO and president of Formula 1, summarized the season on radio station RAI and spoke about the contradictions in relations with the FIA, the development of the sport in the near future and the dominance of Red Bull Racing and Max Verstappen.
“As Formula 1 grows and develops, the division of functions between the FIA and F1 becomes increasingly blurred and disappears,” Domenicali points out. – While we need a sports platform that offers diversification of competencies, everyone needs to think carefully now.
On the one hand, we need race commissioners, and here we cannot do without the contribution of the federation, but the FIA must change its attitude on certain issues, otherwise there is a risk of a crisis of confidence.’
Domenicali analyzed the sporting side of Formula 1 and said: “We are leaving six sprint races on the championship calendar, but at the same time we are thinking about some adjustments in the approach. According to polls, it is worth changing the format of the weekend, because training-only days are not very inspiring for the public. However, there are certain changes in all sports, and we must always keep an eye on what is happening in the world at large.”
When Stefano Domenicali was asked about the prospects for the two Italian stages of the World Cup, which will take place in Monza and Imola, he said: “The negotiations are ongoing, but for their successful continuation a number of conditions must be met. The national automotive club ACI understands this, and I am often in contact with Angelo Sticchi Damiani, its president. But it is already December and work on the reconstruction of the Monza circuit would start immediately after the Grand Prix, so it is necessary to get started as soon as possible. I make my demands, but this pressure is constructive and internal bureaucracy should not be an obstacle to the implementation of projects.”
The president of Formula 1 also commented in his own way on Max Verstappen’s successes: “Our sport is characterized by cyclicity, which is defined by the combination of an excellent car and an exceptionally talented driver. In the case of Verstappen we are dealing with a mature professional who knows how to structure his work well during qualifying and racing. He is not going to give his opponents any chance, and in this Max reminds me of Michael Schumacher.”
Domenicali said a few words about the seven-time world champion and the state he has been in since December 29, 2013: “It seems like that accident in Meribel happened yesterday, but such episodes completely change someone’s life. Out of respect for Michael and his family we have to be there for him, but the situation remains difficult. My relationship with his family is confidential information, but ten years of living like this is something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy.
