The head of Red Bull’s design headquarters, Adrian Newey, suffered a serious accident during cycling training in 2021. Everything could have ended badly if it wasn’t for Bernie Ecclestone – he talked about this on the Formula For Success podcast.
Adrian Newey: “Many accidents happen due to stupidity. But then I realized how important the people around you are.
My skull bones were broken. Luckily my wife and I were with Bernie Ecclestone that day. My wife called Bernie and said it didn’t look good and I needed to go to the hospital. We were in Croatia, Bernie called his Croatian friend, who called the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister called the head of the neurological surgery center, who was on vacation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
I was quickly hospitalized and soon found myself in a hospital in Split. In the afternoon three doctors came. One spoke some English and said my skull was fractured and I needed urgent surgery or I might lose my sight. I asked them what the risk of brain damage was. “Five or ten percent,” they replied.
I called my wife and said, ‘Get me out of here!’ Bernie and Christian Horner helped me return to England where I had the operation.”
