Working with Adrian Newey, the most successful race designer in Formula 1 history, is the dream of all teams, but he has been working with Red Bull Racing for seventeen years and apparently has no intention of changing anything. in this respect.
Speaking on the Formula for Success podcast, Newey said he had already received offers from Ferrari three times but had consistently turned them down.
“The Ferrari brand has its own magic,” Newey said. – To be honest, I’m willing to assume that perhaps everyone who works in motorsport always admires this team and is tempted to join it when such an opportunity presents itself.
And they have already contacted me three times, although one of these cases occurred during the time I was working in IndyCar (i.e. the mid-80s). This is a beautiful brand, it has a kind of mystique. Essentially, this is the Italian national team, with all the pros and cons that come with it.
The disadvantages are this: if you do not do the job properly, you are guaranteed the harshest criticism, you will simply be torn to pieces. Of course, if you succeed, you become a national hero. And this is busy too.
For me, it’s the technical side of things that I’m passionate about and I’ve really enjoyed working with the teams I’ve worked with.”
One of the presenters of the Formula for Success podcast is David Coulthard, a former racing driver with whom Newey has a good relationship dating back to their days at McLaren. It was Coulthard who once played a key role in accepting Newey’s offer to move to Red Bull Racing.
“I moved to Red Bull largely because of your advice, David,” Newey recalls. – And it turns out that I have been working in this team almost from the beginning. In it, I became one of those who led the creation of the technical department, I feel comfortable in this team. We all know how the work is done in it.
As for possible changes, I don’t want to say that I will never change jobs, but it would be like leaving my family, because the team has become just such a family for me.”
