Steve Nielsen steps down as FIA sporting director

Steve Nielsen, who was only appointed FIA sporting director in January, left the position and left the federation. According to BBC Sport, Nielsen, a seasoned professional, held the position for less than a year and left because he was unhappy with the approach of the FIA, which was unwilling to implement the reforms he deemed necessary.

Until 2023, Nielsen held a similar position in Formula 1 for five years, reporting to Ross Brawn. No official reasons are given for his departure from the FIA, and he himself does not want to comment.

59-year-old Steve Nielsen is a man well known in the paddock and beyond, because he started working in Formula 1 in the second half of the 80s, held various positions in different teams, but for the longest time was the sportsman . director of Renault. All championship teams supported his move to the FIA in January, and they are unlikely to like Nielsen’s decision to leave as it may have certain undesirable consequences for them.

He formally left his position on December 21, and for the FIA this is the second notable resignation in the past two weeks: on December 13, Deborah Mayer, who headed the FIA Women in Motorsport Commission, left the federation. The federation did not respond to press requests for comment on this dismissal.
