In Austria, Mick Schumacher finished 6th – this is his best result in Formula 1, but in addition it was he who was recognized as the “Rider of the Day” – the fans gave the most votes to the son of the seven-time world champion. And with both Haas F1 drivers scoring points, the US team AlphaTauri advanced in the Constructors’ Championship to move up to 7th place.
Q: You had a great race – presumably you are happy with the result?
Mick Schumacher: Yes, I enjoyed it very much. Obviously we had to keep going, which is not always possible, but this time we showed our real abilities and in addition I gained an interesting and very valuable experience.
Q: At the start of the season you were not going well, and Gunther Steiner, the team leader, had certain complaints, but you rectified the situation perfectly, and now you have a very different mental attitude…
Mick Schumacher: Right. But the pressure you’re talking about is always helpful because being scolded makes you go faster. We can say it worked to some extent, and at Silverstone I earned points. That was what was missing to feel a burning desire to develop the first success.
Q: In the last two races you really rode a lot more fiercely and aggressively, but I want to ask you about your relationship with your partner, Kevin Magnussen? Did he help you deal with difficulties, did he share his experience?
Mick Schumacher: Kevin had a great start to the season, but now we have a rivalry with him because each of us wants to be our partner ahead of us. And he really suggested me a lot, explained some points, taught me the right approach to the race weekend, shared his experience on how to prepare for the race. In my opinion we complement each other well and this helps us both to grow and develop professionally.
Q: On the Austrian track, the Haas cars were capable of high speeds and you were named Rider of the Day – can you say something about your most spectacular overtaking?
Mick Schumacher: For example, I was ahead of Lewis Hamilton, but it helped me that he made a mistake shortly before. And after the pit stop I had to find a way to overtake both McLaren cars, but they were running on worn tires. Getting around Fernando Alonso turned out to be quite easy, I expected there to be a lot more difficulties, but he acted very correctly and practically missed me. It was very nice that all the opponents acted very correctly and showed respect.
Q: What can be said in general about your career in Formula 1?
Mick Schumacher: I think we are moving in the right direction with the team, we managed to earn points at Silverstone, we earned points at the end of the Austrian Grand Prix, we were able to earn points in the sprint on Saturday – all this points to on a positive trend. This is exactly what we want and hopefully it continues like this with Paul Ricard and the Hungaroring.
And after the summer holidays, when our car is upgraded, we should try to start the second part of the season as successfully as possible.
