Verstappen ahead of Ferrari drivers in the fight for pole at the Austrian Grand Prix, Hamilton and Russell crashed cars

Dutch Red Bull racing driver Max Verstappen clocked the fastest time in Friday qualifying ahead of the Austrian Grand Prix sprint race. The championship leader set his best lap in 1.04.984.

The Ferrari drivers are next in line. Monegasque Charles Leclerc became the second, Spanish carlos sainz shown the third time.

The third segment was interrupted twice by red flags due to accidents by the Mercedes team drivers. First, seven-time British Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton made a mistake on the corner, the car overcame a gravel trap and crashed into a barrier. When the session resumed, his teammate George Russell also crashed his car. Both drivers left the cockpits of their cars unassisted.

The qualifying results determine the starting grid for the sprint, which will take place in Spielberg on Saturday.
