Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone said he helped Flavio Briatore lure Michael Schumacher from Jordan to the Benetton team in 1991, with the German driver winning his first two of seven championship titles.
Bernie Ecclestone: “I knew Michael Schumacher had talent. Eddie Georgean thought highly of him, and Eddie had a keen eye. There was no doubt that Michael would have found a place in Formula 1 soon anyway, but we decided to cut corners and lure him away from Jordan.
Michael and I spoke once when he moved to Ferrari. I asked him, “Who is the leader of the team?” And he said, “I will become one.” And he was great at it. He knew how to bring out the best qualities in people. He earned respect and was listened to. Jean Todt did everything Michael said.
I miss him. He is a star and will always be remembered as such.”
