Horner: Perez’s prospects depend on his results

Sergio Perez’s contract with Red Bull Racing runs until the end of 2024, but there are already several contenders for his place, including Daniel Ricciardo. Team principal Christian Horner said the Mexican driver’s future is in his own hands and that if certain results are achieved, Sergio may be offered a new contract.

Christian Horner: “We are in a privileged position and can afford to take our time. We have many options, and Sergio’s fate is in Sergio’s hands. He is our driver for 2024 and we support him. And if he does excellently next year, there is no reason not to extend his contract until 2025. But this will depend solely on the results he achieves.

It’s hard being Max’s partner. It takes a certain amount of determination and character to be ready to take on Max. As the rivals close the gap, we inevitably want the results of our two riders to be as close as possible.

Sergio has a very high race pace and has ridden strongly many times. But speed in qualifying is an area he needs to work on next winter. He knows very well what he needs to improve in qualifying, so that he doesn’t have to make up for starting from low positions.”
