Esteban Ocon has many reasons to be dissatisfied with both himself and the Alpine F1 team he competes for. Although he didn’t lose that much to his partner, he took 12th place at the end of the season, while in 2022 he was in 8th place. The works team of the Renault group also dropped a few lines lower in the constructors’ championship, behind McLaren and Aston Martin, and that is not encouraging either.
Esteban scored 58 points in his six seasons in Formula 1, with fewer points in 2018, when he was still driving for Force India. But now he plans to change the situation and return to the level he was at at least in 2022, when Alpine finished in fourth place in the championship.
To this end, he will prepare intensively for the next season and will start training immediately after the New Year. He will go to training camp on January 2.
“I’m going to behave like 2022, when I didn’t have a normal life, I was just racing,” Ocon told Speedcafe. – Last year we were distracted by many things, we had many different types of marketing activities outside the racing circuits. Now that will change. In 2024 we will once again adopt a militant stance and fully focus on racing.”
On the one hand, Esteban climbed to the podium in Monaco last season and took 4th place in Las Vegas, but there were too many failed performances, including six times when he failed to finish for one reason or another.
“It is important that we understand what happened then. The season was too uneven in terms of results and the pace we were capable of,” Ocon continued. There were some good moments where we were able to take our chances well, but overall there was a lack of consistency.
There were too many meetings. Without the gearbox failure in Singapore and the collision with Oscar Piastri in Austin we would have finished the year in the top ten of the drivers’ standings, so I think it was a season of missed opportunities. We clearly haven’t done enough.
Certainly, first of all we need to increase stability. Next year it will be important to solve all the problems so that nothing prevents us from starting the season normally.”
