At the end of the season, the Sauber team, racing under the name Alfa Romeo, achieved 16 points and took ninth place in the Constructors’ Championship. However, James Key, who took over the position of technical director at the beginning of the fall, is optimistic about the future. According to him, the minimal speed difference between the cars in 2023 offers Sauber good opportunities in the new season.
James Key: “The density of the results is extraordinary. If you don’t keep track of the numbers, you may not be able to see them from the outside because the order at the finish line doesn’t change. But if you estimate the lap times, the difference between us and the leaders will only be 1.5%. This means that our car is 98.5% exactly the same as the fastest car in the championship, and sometimes the difference is even smaller.
I won’t go into details, but if you evaluate the difference between us and Mercedes or Red Bull, we are only a few corners or a few brakes away. The difference is no longer as big as it was a few years ago. The results are incredibly dense.
That’s why I believe that if we do everything right, on the track and at the grassroots level, and make the right decisions about the car’s development path, many opportunities will open up for us.
Everyone is on a level playing field and there is no reason to think we will be stuck in our current position forever. I believe we can go a long way, so the team has every reason to be optimistic.”
