Klia: Leclair had to drive very carefully

Jock Klia, personal trainer of Charles Leclerc, admitted after the Austrian Grand Prix, which ended in his division’s victory, that closer to the finish of the race everyone’s nerves at Ferrari were on the limit due to technical difficulties that caused the driver reported on the radio.

Jock Klia: “After everything that has happened in the last four races, we were already wondering what could happen this time? But Charles managed to cross the finish line first.

It all started with some very minor throttle issues and we understood that the situation could develop in two scenarios. Either he will be able to go the distance, or something will fail completely. Fortunately everything went well, but of course we had to be very nervous.

Still, the main positive is that the car was capable of a fast pace. And Charles just tried to fly as carefully as possible in the closing laps. This can be compared to the situation in which you deliberately go through bends without letting go of the accelerator pedal completely.

At the same time, Charles could not slow down with the intensity with which he wanted, he had to start braking a little earlier. If Max Verstappen drives behind it, who has the same tires as you, you should of course not slow down too much. But Charles did a great job.

At the same time, of course, he thought something like this: “Obviously there is a disturbance. But will it manifest itself more strongly? Or will something suddenly go wrong?” In general, I can imagine what was going on in his head.

When we talk about the Austrian weekend in general, after Saturday’s sprint we came to the conclusion that our car is faster than it looks, but we simply have not been able to realize this advantage over 20 laps of the distance. Also because no one had time to start problems with tire degradation. We must not forget that in the short race on Saturday there is much less fuel in the tanks of the cars, which means that the load on the rubber is also less.

But in the Grand Prix cars start with full tanks and our advantage came straight to the fore, because the F1-75 car allowed our drivers to save rubber. That was the difference between a sprint and a race on Sunday.”
